436th AIRLIFT WING (436 AW)

Though the 436th Airlift Wing was started as a Reserve wing in 1949 and did not see active duty until 1966, it eventually became the only wing to operate the C-5 Galaxy exclusively. The wing participated heavily in the Vietnam War by flying cargo, medical evacuations, and various other missions. Throughout the 1980s and 90s, the wing, along with Reserve units, was involved in evacuations and support of operations in Grenada, Panama, and Southeast Asia. The wing remains the only combat-ready C-5 Galaxy operators in the Air Force.
